The Education of Indigenous Peoples In Canada: A Historical Study

This course examines the development of Indigenous education in Canada. In the assessment of Indigenous education students will have an opportunity to utilize the holistic model of analysis. This particular model explores the four aspects of the self: emotional, physical, mental and spiritual. The course will examine the pre-confederacy and post-confederacy eras in relation to Western ideologies, educational policies and their impact on Indigenous people. The course will focus on the residential school era and the subsequent abuse of individuals, families, communities and tribes. Throughout the course, students will explore the juxtaposition of Western educational perspectives and traditional Indigenous education philosophies.
